About Nathan

Nathan Humphrey began studying the violin at the age of eight. Through much hard work (and with patient parents) he was accepted to the University of Missouri- Kansas City Conservatory where he earned his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Artist’s Certificate in Violin Performance, studying with Benny Kim. While attending UMKC, Nathan also became the Orchestra Manager for the Conservatory Orchestra and held that position for four years.

In the time since, he has been involved in multiple local orchestras, including the Medical Arts Symphony, Midwest Chamber Ensemble, Kinnor Philharmonic, Church of the Resurrection Orchestra, and the Kansas City Symphony. Most recently, Nathan won a tenured position with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra (2023). Nathan is also an active chamber music player. He has performed in chamber groups with Midwest Chamber Ensemble and Classical Revolution KC, as well as attending the Kent/Blossom Music Festival in Ohio and participating as both student and teacher in the Heartland Chamber Music Festival in Kansas City.

In 2016 Nathan won both the State and Regional rounds of the Music Teacher National Association’s Chamber Music Competition and was a finalist in the National round. During COVID, Nathan put on several outdoor chamber music performances, including a performance of the Mendelssohn Octet, from which a portion of the proceeds went to The Healing House, a local charitable organization.

As a soloist, Nathan has performed several times with the Midwest Chamber Ensemble and the Medical Arts Symphony. He has also won Second Prize in Kinnor Philharmonic Tiberius Klausner Concerto Competition and has twice been selected as a finalist in the UMKC Chancellor’s Concerto Competition.

As a teacher, Nathan strives to be adaptive to his student’s individual needs, understanding that no two students are exactly alike. While he focuses mostly on teaching classical music, he also teaches fiddling and improvisational playing, suited to pop/rock bands. No matter what style you want to learn, Nathan has the ability to give you the tools you need to succeed.
